Audi is set to launch an electric mountain bike that takes design inspiration from the Audi RS Q e-tron Dakar off roader.
The bike, which is simply called the Electric Mountain Bike(Opens in a new window), consists of an aluminum frame with an integrated 720Wh, 36 Volt Fantic Integra Lithium battery. It's used to power a Brose S-Mag 250 watt electric motor offering 90Nm of torque, stopping relies on 220mm interchangeable cartridge disc brakes, and shock absorption is courtesy of Öhlins TTX 22M T205x65 shocks.
Audi hasn't divulged how many miles you can expect to travel on a single charge, but there are four levels of electric assistance available (Eco, Tour, Sport, and Boost). Eco is meant to provide the most efficient level of electric assistance, Tour gives a "notable level" of assistance above what Eco provides, and Sport is engineered for sports cycling. The highest level, Boost, "delivers the maximum level of electrical assistance for challenging, hilly routes."
Riders will be able to tell when the battery needs a recharge via the small digital display mounted on the handlebars. Once the charge drops below 10%, a level indicator will flash in the top right corner. It should be possible to continue riding once the battery is empty, but your legs will certainly miss the electric assistance.
This is not a mountain bike many will be able to afford, and that's if you can get one at all. Audi is offering it in three sizes with prices starting at £8,499 (roughly $10,100) and for now you can only register your interest(Opens in a new window) to buy one. Once available, only a limited number will be made.
