The Red and Green Power Rangers have combined their power in the latest issue of BOOM! Studios' Mighty Morphin' series. The move has precedent in the franchise's lore — in the two-parter, «The Green Candle,» in order to prevent Rita Repulsa from taking Tommy's life and Green Ranger powers, he transfers his powers to Red Ranger Jason, giving him his Dragon Shield and Dagger, as well as the powers that come with them.
A lot has changed from that original TV continuity. In the current comics timeline, Tommy is the White Ranger, Rocky is the Red Ranger, and Matthew is the new Green Ranger working for Grace Sterling, a former Ranger now outside Zordon's command. At this point in time, Rocky and Matthew are the only Rangers left on Earth, taking on King Aradon themselves while the other Rangers are elsewhere searching for a new Command Center.

In Mighty Morphin' #20 by Mat Groom and Moisés Hidalgo, during the ensuing fight, Matthew puts all of his trust in Rocky by transferring his Green Ranger powers to the Red Ranger. Much like Tommy before him, Rocky adopts Matthew's Dragon Shield and Dagger. On top of creating an even stronger Ranger, more powerful than either Rocky or Matthew are on their own merits, it brings together full circle themes of unity and trust within the current arc. Exhausted and out of confidence, Rocky is ready to give in, but Matthew is able to buoy his ally, declaring him the «last Ranger standing» and giving him both the power and confidence he needs to fight on just a little longer.
