DLC is a breezy new addition to the Gen 9 games, taking trainers to the land of Kitakami for a folklore-inspired tale about a mysterious ogre and the island's three protectors.is, overall, a critic-proof franchise, and anyone who enjoyed the base games will enjoy the DLC. However, anyone who found the performance issues too distracting, or felt let down by 's mechanics, won't be won over by what offers either. Regardless, the DLC is a fun foray into a new area — and its storytelling and characters are really where it shines.
This first wave of the larger DLC — - tasks trainers with running around Kitakami and finding signboards, learning about a local legend involving an ogre and the Loyal Three Pokémon, and interacting with newcomers Kieran and Carmine. These two students from the Blueberry Academy are nice additions and have more depth than typical rivals or NPCs, an aspect that already excelled at. Kieran stands out as one of the better-written characters, offering a new take on how rivals — and how those friendships — can pan out.

The actual narrative of is surprisingly short, and anyone who has finished the base games and completed the Paldea Pokédex will find the new Kitakami Pokédex over halfway completed from the get-go. This means there's not a lot of time to spend in Kitakami, which is a shame, since the island's culture, characters, and locales are all interesting. Despite being quick, the story is a good one and never feels rushed — and it sets up the upcoming DLC with a more menacing tone.
