The April Dev Diaries update for Pokémon GO has announced big changes to the Mega Evolution mechanics, introducing Mega Levels and new Mega Energy uses. After weeks of speculation surrounding a Pokémon GO Mega Evolution datamine, the confirmation from Niantic reveals potential benefits that could make Mega Evolution more useful, as well as more accessible, for fans. Because of this, Mega Evolving Pokémon could become a common and standard part of daily gameplay, instead of a rare ability occasionally pulled out for big events.
Mega Evolution was first introduced to the Pokémon game series during Generation Six as a staple battle mechanic of Pokémon X and Y. The ability, which offers select Pokémon temporary, additional evolutions, has been favored for its powerful move sets and benefits in battle. Additionally, each Mega-capable Pokémon has received a new design based on its final evolution, giving many older species updated styles that fit modern gameplay. However, while Pokémon's Mega Evolution mechanic has been popular in main series games, it has been less successful in Pokémon GO due to frustrating mechanics.

According to PokémonGoLive, a Mega Evolution update that overhauls mechanics has already gone live in Australia and New Zealand and will be released globally in the near future. The update will make Mega Raids easier to participate in, enable Mega Evolution in Raid and Battle lobbies, offer new Mega Evolution mechanics, and alter how Mega Energy is used as a resource. One of the most exciting changes will be Mega Levels, which will allow Mega Capable Pokémon to grow each time they Mega Evolve.
