Marvel Comics MMO from DC Universe Online team cancelled in favour of smaller projects

The DC Universe Online team’s take on the Marvel universe has met an abrupt end only six months after it was first announced.

There was never any formal reveal or trailer, but a dedicated Marvel online multiplayer role-playing game from publisher Daybreak Games was announced to be in development last year.

Dimensional Ink Games, the studio responsible for the DC Universe Online game, was spearheading the project, which seemed like a match made in heaven. Unfortunately, it’s now been abandoned before we got to see anything of it.

Enad Global 7, the holding company which acquired Daybreak Games in 2020, made the announcement earlier today, explaining that it’s changing its priorities after a recent revaluation.

It had planned to invest 500 million Swedish Krona (roughly £40.5 million) into the Marvel game for the next three years but will now be spending that money elsewhere.

Namely, the money will be spread out across multiple, smaller projects, such as new games based on the company’s own properties and upgrades to the DC Universe Online and The Lord Of The Rings Online games.

‘Based on the re-evaluation of the development risk profile, size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board has decided to change the development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects,’ reads the statement from Enad Global 7.

While the statement makes no mention of it, it’s suspected that the project’s cancellation is connected with the departure of Jack Emmert, who was meant to be leading its development.

Emmert has a wealth of experience working on online multiplayer role-playing games, including DC Universe Online and the now defunct Marvel Heroes.
