A Marvel MMO from Lord of the Rings Online publisher Daybreak Games has now been canceled. Before its foray into Middle Earth, Daybreak entered the world of superheroes alongside fellow developer Dimensional Ink with the still-ongoing DC Universe Online MMO, as spearheaded by veteran developer Jack Emmert. Prior to this, Emmert also co-founded Cryptic Studios, which developed another superpowered MMO titled City Of Heroes. This game focused on an original cast of characters and lasted from 2004 to 2012.
It wouldn’t be long before Emmert attempted to lend his team’s abilities to the world of Marvel, as both Cryptic Studios and Daybreak Games once worked on Marvel-based MMO titles that ultimately never saw the light of day – with the latter’s rumored cancellation in 2018 reportedly leading to many layoffs. Last November, Enad Global 7's Q3 2021 financial report listed a yet a third Marvel-based MMO project to be headed by Emmert, Daybreak Games, and Dimensional Ink Studios, and while nothing else was confirmed regarding its existence, the report mentioned that it would be a longer-term project with a formal announcement possibly taking place sometime next year.

Or not, as Enad Global 7 has just announced that it is discounting its planned Marvel MMO in a press release earlier today (via GamesRadar). The Swedish-based holding company cited “development risk profile, size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group" as the main reasons for this cancellation, and it will instead transfer the 500 million Swedish Krona (roughly $50 million) that it previously put into this now-defunct Marvel game into the existing Lord
