It's surprising it hasn’t happened sooner, but the worlds of Pokemon GO and the Pokemon Trading Card Game are finally coming together later this year. Technically speaking, this already happened last year with the special Professor Willow card made for the mobile game’s fifth anniversary and the trading card game’s 25th anniversary. This time, however, it’s an entire expansion.
Announced via the official Pokemon GO website, all developer Niantic says is that the expansion releases this summer and will feature cards based on the mobile game. No other details have been shared besides, except for a first look at the packaging for the cards included in the expansion.

The packaging potentially offers some idea of which Pokemon will make an appearance in the expansion, namely Pikachu, Mewtwo, Gyarados, Larvitar, Blissey, Aipom, and Conkeldurr. Professor Willow can be spotted too, although it’s unknown if the special anniversary card is what’s included or if it’s a different card entirely.
A PokeStop can be seen as well and Blissey appears to be standing above one of Pokemon GO’s Pokemon Gyms, seemingly confirming that the mobile game’s unique mechanics and items will appear as cards. What function they’ll serve is the real question fans will want answering. There’s no word on when more information on the expansion will drop, nor is there any mention of it on the official website for the Trading Card Game, at least at the time of writing.
Another question that needs answering is whether these new Pokemon GO cards will be integrated into the upcoming Trading Card Game app. The Pokemon Company announced this virtual alternative in September, which will function similarly to Konami’s Yu-Gi-Oh!
