A Pokémon fan has just come across an unusual problem in a playthrough of Pokémon Crystal, learning that one of their Pokémon was officially considered illegal by Pokémon Home. Pokémon Home received its 2.0 update earlier this month, allowing players to link it to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and Legends: Arceus.
Illegal Pokémon are ones that do not obey the mechanics of the games. Usually a result of modding or save editing, they can have outrageous stats or know moves not part of their species' movepool. While technically undetectable in a game by itself, they can cause problems when attempting to use online services like Pokémon Home, which automatically rejects them. The Pokémon franchise's inter-game transfer service is intended to allow the easy movement of Pokémon between supported titles, allowing players to use their favorite team members in new games. However, it isn't flawless, and sometimes even legal Pokémon can be restricted from the service for one reason or another.

Reddit user YaBoiHorseJesus recently encountered one such obscure restriction stemming from a playthrough of Pokémon Crystal's 3DS port. In Pokémon Crystal, players are able to receive the Odd Egg from the Route 34 Day Care. The egg can randomly hatch into a number of different baby Pokémon, such as Pichu and Tyrogue, but the Pokémon will always have Dizzy Punch as an Egg Move. However, when YaBoiHorseJesus attempted to transfer their Hitmonlee toHome, having raised it from an Odd Egg Tyrogue, they encountered a snag; officially, Hitmonlee cannot know Dizzy Punch, making this one technically illegal despite the lack of actual tampering.
