The highly-anticipated Street Fighter 6 just received a new trailer in today’s State of Play presentation, and it promises to shake up the series in a big way. Not only does it show off more of the hip-hop aesthetic that the previous trailer teased, but it also shows some gameplay of a semi-open RPG-esque exploration segment. Perhaps this entails some sort of new story mode?
The trailer kicks off with a view of a Times Square-esque area packed with easter eggs referencing the entire series. It then cuts to Luke, the new character that Capcom has heavily advertised, practicing with a punching bag in a stylish manner. After a few shots showing off an expansive city, the trailer shows off footage of the aforementioned exploration gameplay, which features a hooded individual that could either be Luke or a customizable avatar.
Other than that, the trailer finally shows off the traditional Street Fighter gameplay that fans know and love. Notably, the crisp visuals and smooth animations make the gameplay engine appear quite the step up compared to Street Fighter 4 and Street Fighter 5’s engines. Additionally, the trailer unveils just a handful of characters that players can expect to see in the final game, including Ryu, Chun-Li, Luke, and newcomer Jamie.
Alongside this new gameplay trailer, Capcom revealed that Street Fighter 6 will feature real-time in-game commentary for the first time in the series. Essentially, Capcom has gotten well-known figures in the Street Fighter community to record several lines that can play during any given match, giving the impression that you are competing in a real fighting game tournament.
