The existence of Par For The Dungeon suggests we’ve reached peak roguelike. The genre is so saturated at this point that developers are resorting to the deeply unusual, like Par for the Dungeon.
This roguelike draws inspiration from What the Golf? and sees you batting a ball around a dungeon, collecting coins, battling enemies, and doing other roguelike things.
As the title suggests, each ‘thwack’ of the ball counts as a move. Beat the dungeon within ‘par’, a golfing term that determines how many hits you can make before the ball goes in the hole, and you earn additional rewards.
You can spend these rewards on handy items from the shop. These include weapons and traps, like grappling hooks and laser beams, which make combat all the easier. Of course, it’s not just enemies that will trip you up. You’ll also have to navigate traps and environmental obstacles, like lava.
Levels take you across a rich and varied world. You’ll encounter freezing ice caves, overgrown forests, and what looks like an evil alchemist’s dungeon. Having new environments to explore helps keep Par for the Dungeon compelling as you work your way through its 100+ levels.
There’s heaps of replayability in Par for the Dungeon. You can work your way through the levels in as many moves as you want, but you can also return to beat them under par. You can also unlock new outfits to make Cal look increasingly more stylish as you progress.
