Blizzard has revealed details about Overwatch 2’s new seasonal structure and confirmed that, unlike the original game, the sequel won’t include loot boxes.
Overwatch 2 will launch in early access on October 4 as a free-to-play title.
The sequel, which includes a new five-versus-five setup as well as cross-play and cross-progression, is coming to PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4 and Switch.
It will have seasonal updates every nine weeks and a Battle Pass featuring new content including heroes, game modes, maps and cosmetics.
Players will also be able to acquire items through a new and “consistently updated” in-game shop, but the game won’t include loot boxes.
Blizzard said “players can expect to see a new hero every other season, with elements like new maps and game modes in the seasons between.”
Season 1 will include Sojourn, Junker Queen and an unannounced support hero, plus new maps and modes.
“We’re also releasing a reimagined competitive experience that was created to give players more tools to improve gameplay and feel a sense of progression in competitive play,” Blizzard said, adding that more details on the overhaul will be announced in the near future.
Season 2 will include a new tank hero, map, and a collection of skins, and a new PvE experience will arrive in 2023.
