As Outlander season 6 unfolds, Claire and Jaime Frasier are facing many obstacles alongside their loved ones, but one of the most dangerous threats might be Claire herself. The time-traveling matriarch has always carried her 20th-century sensibilities with her, no matter the timeline, but after the brutal attack Claire suffered in Outlander season 5, she seems determined to make a change. And while her response to the violence and misogyny she experienced is a completely reasonable reaction, she may be unwittingly placing herself and her family in an even more precarious position, as new characters arrive on Frasier's Ridge.
Outlander, based on the Diana Gabaldon book series of the same name, has addressed the mistrust of women that permeated society in the 18th century since season 1, when Claire was first thrown back in time. Nearly every season has included the bandying of witchcraft accusations and the threat of violence to Claire because of her skill as a healer. Beginning with her second trip to the past during Outlander season 3—after Claire has worked to become an acclaimed surgeon and lived through the beginning of the women's liberation movement—her inclinations to hide her skill and intelligence have lessened even further. Unfortunately, Claire has encouraged her daughter, Brianna, to do the same. Outlander season 6 is on track to bring this issue to a head in an explosive manner if something doesn't change quickly.
