Metal Gear Solid will someday become a movie, but that day is still far away. The film has got its director, writer, and star actor, but finding the right story seems to be as elusive as a Snake in a box.
Speaking to IGN at the Moon Knight premiere, Solid Snake actor Oscar Isaac gave us an update on how the movie is progressing. “We’re searching, we’re searching like Solid Snake,” Isaac said. “We’re climbing through air ducts, we’re looking for the story.”

Progress has been slow for the Metal Gear Solid movie. The film was first announced as far back as 2015, with Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts revealing in 2020 that the pandemic had delayed pre-production. He also promised fans that any Metal Gear film would remain "true to [Hideo] Kojima-san's spirit." Soon after, Oscar Isaac signed on as the lead role of Solid Snake, revealing in a later interview that Metal Gear held a special place in his heart.
"I just loved the game. Love the feeling that the game would give me every time I’d play," Isaac said. "It’s just a strangely isolated, mournful, lonely game to play that has these incredible moments of violence and terror, with these weird, psychedelic concepts and villains."
Rise of Skywalker and Detective Pikachu writer Derek Connolly signed on to help write the script back in 2017, and several drafts have already been completed. If what Isaac says is accurate, then there might be some disagreements over the script that is keeping Metal Gear in pre-production.
But as ResetEra noted, if they’re looking for a Metal Gear story that makes sense, “they'll never find one.”
