Fans are flocking to the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, as it outsells its glossy remake on Xbox platforms. That is according to UK sales charts, with the 2009 game shooting to fifth place, ahead of more recent titles like Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy, and of course, the 2022 release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
This comes after a long-awaited server fix was rolled in these old Call of Duty games, allowing fans to put down the more recent releases and start reliving some good ol' Xbox 360 memories. The best performer of the bunch is Black Ops 2, which sits a spot above Modern Warfare 2, only beaten by Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption, and FIFA 23. In other words, gamers are going through a huge nostalgia fest right now.

As per gamesindustry.biz's monthly Xbox sales report, we can see that a whole lot of UK gamers decided to log into the older Call of Duty games over the past few weeks, rather than the more recent Modern Warfare remakes.
This doesn't mean that fans were picking the original Xbox 360 releases up from their local CEX. No, they were instead buying them digitally for either Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S, since these consoles are backwards compatible with 360 games.
This isn't bad going at all for Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops 2, which launched in 2009 and 2012 respectively. Many fans have pointed to these increased player bases as an indictment of the quality of more recent instalments, but it's not clear if this is the reason so many people are flocking to the older games, or if fans are just feeling nostalgic.
