Kumail Nanjiani's Haja Estree is much more important than he initially appears in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ewan McGregor returns to Star Wars to reprise his role as the titular Jedi Master 17 years after Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith. Chronicling his adventure to save the kidnapped Leia Organa (Vivien Lyra Blair), Obi-Wan Kenobi sees Ben Kenobi encounter several new characters in the unfolding space opera, including the faux-Jedi Haja.
Disney and Lucasfilm opted to keep specific plot details and character details for Obi-Wan Kenobi under wraps until the series debuted on Disney+. Aside from returning characters like Hayden Christensen's Darth Vader and McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi, barely any details were provided regarding the show's new characters. So while Nanjiani's involvement in the Star Wars show was long since confirmed, his exact role remained unclear until he debuted in Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 2, where he met the Jedi Master in search of a young Leia in Daiyu.

As it turns out, Nanjiani's Haja is a street con artist who is pretending to be a Jedi to scam people for financial gain. Obi-Wan saw his scheme right away, and although the Jedi Master didn't reveal his real identity, he used that information to coerce Haja into helping him locate young Leia. As infuriating as it was learning about Haja's ploy, the character eventually turned out to be an ally after all, helping Obi-Wan and young Leia leave Daiyu and escape the clutches of Reva (Moses Ingram) and the Imperial Officers hunting them.
