MultiVersus was July’s best-selling video game in the US market based on dollar sales, the NPD Group reported on Friday.
While Warner’s game is free-to-play, MultiVersus led monthly sales because of the popularity of its Founder’s Pack bundles, which cost between $40 and $100, the market research firm said.
Elden Ring slipped to No.2 on July’s software chart, while Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga also dropped one place to No.3.
The only other new entries in the top 20 were Xenoblade Chronicles 3 at No.4 (although it could have been higher if NPD tracked Switch digital sales in its ranked reporting), and Digimon Survive at No.8.
On the hardware front, PS5 generated the highest dollar sales of all consoles in both July and 2022 year to date, while Switch led both time periods based on unit sales.
NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said total consumer spending on game hardware, content and accessories in July dropped 9% compared to the same period last year, to $4.18 billion.
Year to date spending totalled $30.5 billion, representing a 10% decline compared to the same period in 2021, with subscription content remaining the only major spending category to experience growth.
MultiVersus Season 1 launched this week. The Season 1 update included notable tweaks are nerfs for Bugs Bunny, Velma and Finn, three characters generally believed to be among the best in the game.
Meanwhile, Arya Stark, LeBron James and Wonder Woman, three characters said to be somewhat weaker, were given buffs.
