We were told, or rather, warned, that Red XIII would ride a chocobo in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth long before launch. This got a lot of attention, since it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, leaving the director to explain both how he'd ride one, and why he wanted to in the first place. After all, he hasn't got opposable thumbs, and if he wants to move faster, he could just... run.
However, the game is in our hands now, and I think it's safe to say that fans have come around to the idea of Red XIII absolutely pointlessly riding a chocobo - because he looks so daft doing it. Seriously, the fanbase can't get enough of it. It might be one of the biggest talking points of the game right now.
I mean, look at him. Just look. Poor guy's all hunched over and not even able to hold on to the reins, but by god, he's doing it. Somehow, he's doing it. And I'm so glad he is, because he looks absolutely wonderfully ridiculous.
If you haven't been blessed by the sight of it in motion just yet, then here you go. It somehow gets even better.
I mean, sure, it's not clear how else he was going to manage chocobo riding. But I think part of me suspected that he'd kind of just lay on the chocobo, like a dog does in a moving car. Perhaps complete with Red XIII clearly struggling to maintain his balance. But no, he handles it like a pro. A very silly-looking pro. It has to be said that he's probably not very comfortable either.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is full of silly little things like this. As we reported on yesterday, the game roasts you if you're awful at the piano. Well, more accurately, your party roasts Cloud. Poor guy - Aerith and Tifa really don't hold back. It's good then that many fans have been getting in some piano lessons ahead of launch, learning how to make Cloud play a range of songs, including 'Welcome To The Black Parade' by My Chemical Romance.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is out now, available exclusively for PlayStation 5. Much like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we can expect a port
