Naughty Dog will celebrate The Last of Us Day tomorrow, but you shouldn't go into its livestream expecting any news on new games or TV shows. The PlayStation Studios developer has taken to Twitter to kill any excitement by confirming it'll be focusing on «art, merch, and more». The studio continues: «While we're honoring the series' 10-year legacy, we will not be discussing any future game or TV show projects.»
The Last of Us Day — known as Outbreak Day before it — has rarely ever delivered significant news for fans; instead, it's designed to celebrate the community that's built up around the stories of Joel and Ellie. However, with projects in the pipeline for both PS5 and TV screens, it's understandable why a fanbase may expect even just a little tease of what's to come.
Of course, the elephant in the room is The Last of Us Multiplayer in the works at Naughty Dog, which is confirmed to be a thing in development, but according to the latest reports, isn't exactly going well. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier reported the online project has been scaled back after a recent evaluation from Sony and Bungie. This led to «slowed down development» as «the creators reassess its quality and long-term viability». It's unclear whether the multiplayer experience will ever see the light of day.
On the TV side of things, HBO has confirmed a second season of The Last of Us will be going ahead, adapting a portion of The Last of Us: Part II. However, as a result of the WGA strike, production has been put on hold. So, while you won't be hearing of any new The Last of Us games tomorrow, but Naughty Dog probably has a cool new t-shirt to promote.
