Ship inventory is one of the most important upgrades available in No Man's Sky, regardless of which class of ship any traveler chooses to explore the galaxy with. For the longest time, ship inventory was only divided into two different areas called «general» and «technology.» Anything that was part of or stored in the ship could go in the general slots, but only the installed equipment could be placed in the technology openings. This made it difficult to install the best possible upgrades in No Man's Sky while also optimizing ship storage efficiency for those long journies away from any vendors or home bases.
Thanks to the No Man's Sky Outlaws update additions and changes, all ships now have a third compartment that is explicitly for cargo storage. This makes all starships similar to the Exosuit, which has had general, technology, and cargo inventory categories for years. Upgrading the Starship inventory slots has remained largely unchanged, but the addition of a cargo slot makes things far more costly.

Unlike the Exosuit upgrades, which eventually receive a hard cap of 1 million units per new slot, the ship inventory upgrades gradually increase the price with each upgrade. Furthermore, the increase in the price of upgrades that are applied to one inventory category is applied to the rest. This means that whenever the general storage is increased, the price of the technology and cargo slots increase as well. There is currently an infinite money glitch in No Man's Sky, which definitely makes the upgrade more doable. However, this glitch is a major oversite and will likely be patched as soon as possible.
