Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida has revealed there's currently no post-launch DLC in the works for the Square Enix RPG. In a new interview with Game Informer, he calls it a «one-off game» containing an experience to match the full price cost. Yoshida wishes to give fans «satisfaction equal to what they paid or even more than that».
While this is the plan right now, Square Enix at least appears open to the idea of expanding the Final Fantasy XVI story either through expansions or even spin-off titles. Yoshida said: «We have no idea if people are going to fall in love with Valisthea and fall in love with Clive’s story and want to see more of the world and more of its characters. So while we always want to consider DLC or spinoffs or those types of things where you can learn more about the game, first we want to see if Valisthea and Clive are really things players around the world want to see more of and then make that decision.»
The producer's comments build upon the idea that the RPG will be a complete experience at launch on 22nd June 2023, with the game currently not shipping with a day one patch. The team believes it has a product already ready for launch and is confident in its final build. As such, those buying the PS5 exclusive physically should have the complete game right there on the disc.
Recent mainline entries in the Final Fantasy saga have been supported with post-launch DLC, so Yoshida's proposal represents a breakaway from what has become the norm for the industry. Final Fantasy XV was treated to four expansions focusing on different characters, and also got the multiplayer mode Comrades. Then, Final Fantasy VII Remake was handed a Yuffie-focused expansion when it came to PS5.
