Nintendo has released a demo for Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon on the Nintendo Switch eShop.
Players who purchase the full game will be able to transfer their progress from the demo when it releases on March 17.
Unlike the third-person action games of the main series, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon sees players use the left joy-con to control Cereza, while using the right joy-con to control Cheshire, a huge toy cat that Cereza has brought to life.
The game tells the story of a young Umbra Witch who would go on to become the Bayonetta in the recently released third game.
Exploring storybook-inspired words, the game aims to introduce new fans to the series.
In VGC’s preview of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, critic Matthew Castle wrote: “You might wonder why Platinum is taking a series beloved by action fans and attempting to mould something friendlier, both mechanically and visually.
“You wouldn’t call Origins a family game – it’s chock full of demons and folkloric oddities – but there’s a tweeness and simplicity that feels like a bid to put Bayonetta in front of a different audience.
“Whether or not it’ll succeed in opening the series up is hard to call from a handful of opening levels. Will kids be drawn in by the storybook charm and come out the other end as pure Platinum acolytes? Hard to say. But anyone picking up Origins *is* going to get a taste of what Platinum does best – good characters clobbering bad characters – and probably find it more welcoming than their other games.”
The last main series Bayonetta game, Bayonetta 3 was released in October to mostly positive reviews. VGC’s Bayonetta 3 review called the game a “love letter to gaming’s most wildly creative action star”.
