Warning: spoilers ahead for Earthchild chapter 2!
While it's only two chapters in, the new manga Earthchild by mangaka Hideo Shinkai has already proven to be Shonen Jump's most heartbreaking series. The struggles are relatable but expertly embellished by Hideo's unique world that's always protected by just one superhero at a time, known as an Earthchild.
So far, each new installment introduces a new wave of emotional upheaval that comes from the fact that a normal, everyday citizen named Reisuke Sawada chose to involve himself with a woman who lives in a completely different world than him. He has fallen in love with the series' eponymous hero Kareri Hoshifuri. How the two eventually connect is heartwarming and proves just how powerful Reisuke's love for Kareri is just based on how he's somehow able to withstand the effects of mind-erasing technology she and her organization employs. Their initial struggles derive from Kareri's fear of getting too close to anyone, especially romantically, but Reisuke's awe-inspiring perseverance and overall admiration for Kareri is enough for the Earthchild to eventually break her own rule and date him. The saddest moment, however, presents itself after they marry and have a child, as they must contend with the inherent risk that comes from Kareri's occupation, which ostensibly leads to her death.
