In a recent interview, former BioWare developer Aaryn Flynn looked back on his history with the famous studio, briefly touching on why he believes that The Witcher 3 was a better product than Dragon Age: Inquisition, the most recent game in the Dragon Age franchise. Inquisition launched in 2014, with The Witcher 3 coming in the following year.
Despite the fact that both games are fantasy action RPGs released around the same time, The Witcher 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition are quite different from each other. For one thing, The Witcher 3 is firmly centered on Geralt, a pre-established character with his own personality and backstory, while Dragon Age: Inquisition follows a custom character built by the player. Aside from this, though, the technology behind each game was quite different, with The Witcher 3 being crafted in CD Projekt Red's proprietary REDengine while Inquisition was built in Frostbite, the same engine used for several Battlefield games. More impactful, however, was the issue of cross-generational development, as Inquisition was designed to run on PS4 and Xbox One in addition to PS3 and Xbox 360, whereas The Witcher 3 was exclusively developed for PS4-era hardware.

According to comments made by Flynn in an interview with USA Today, this generational consideration hindered Dragon Age: Inquisition. When comparing the more technologically advanced and immersive The Witcher 3 to the latest BioWare fantasy RPG, Flynn noted that Dragon Age's development had to focus on the "lowest common denominator," which forced them to abandon certain ambitions they had for the game.
