The origins of Minecraft's newest monsters, the Wardens, are explored by MatPat in his latest Game Theory video. MatPat, a.k.a Matthew Patrick, has been piecing together the hidden story of Minecraft for the past three years, and he wasted no time theorizing on Minecraft's new The Wild Update, which released on June 7.
The Wild Update has brought many new things to Minecraft including mobs, items, and biomes. Perhaps the most notable additions are the new Deep Dark and Ancient Cities biomes. These areas are rare and hard to find, and they contain new types of block classified as Sculk, an odd material that looks and behaves as if it's alive. Sculk Catalysts spread by using souls of the living, and Sculk Sensors detect any sound the player makes, which sets off the Sculk Shriekers. When the Shriekers sound off, it alerts a new, blind, and devastatingly strong mob known as Wardens. These provide a new challenge to players, who now must be sneaky as they explore if they don't want one of the strongest monsters in the game to come after them.

In his latest The Game Theorists video, MatPat examines every available asset from Minecraft's The Wild Update to theorize on the purpose of the Ancient Cities and how the Warden ties into it. In a previous video, Mat guessed Wardens were creatures forged to protect these underground cities, but new evidence suggests the opposite. Within any Ancient City is a massive structure made from a new indestructible block called Reinforced Deepslate, resembling a portal.
