Top Gun: Maverick breaks another box office record, officially beating Titanic to become Paramount's highest-grossing movie of all time. After numerous delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Joseph Kosinski's Top Gun: Maverick soared into theaters at the end of May, earning rave reviews from both audiences and critics. The film, which acts as a sequel to 1986's Top Gun, brings back Tom Cruise's hotshot pilot Pete «Maverick» Mitchell and sees him train a new batch of fighter pilot recruits for a dangerous mission.
Top Gun: Maverick had a strong opening weekend, earning $126.7 million, but positive reviews and strong word of mouth have kept the film's weekend-to-weekend box office drops at a minimum. The film has broken numerous records since it was released, not only quickly becoming the highest-grossing film of Cruise's career, but also becoming only the second movie since Avengers: Endgame in 2019 to earn over $1 billion. Despite strong competition in the form of Jurassic World Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and Lightyear, Top Gun: Maverick has continued its strong performance at the box office, recently even surpassing The Dark Knight's total domestic earnings.
