Netflix's Spy Kids reboot casts its lead characters, with Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi leading the new family. Director Robert Rodriguez launched the family-friendly spy franchise in 2001. The original trilogy of Spy Kids movies starred Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alexa PenaVega, and Daryl Sabara as members of the Cortez family. The Spy Kids films made over $300 million worldwide on small budgets. Rodriguez attempted to reboot the series in 2011 with a new family led by Jessica Alba and Joel McHale, but it received the worst reviews of the franchise and had the lowest box office performance.
The Spy Kids franchise is set to make a big comeback in the near future, more than a decade after the last installment in the franchise. It was announced in early 2022 that Rodriguez signed a deal with Netflix to reboot the popular family franchise for the streaming titan. The announcement came with confirmation that Rodriguez would write and direct the new installment after working with Netflix on We Can Be Heroes. It was not known at the time whether or not the new Spy Kids movie would bring back any of the original cast members as part of the reboot.

Now, it has been announced that the Spy Kids reboot has a brand new family. A report from Deadline revealed that Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez and Shazam!'s Zachary Levi are set to play the ex-spy parents in the new film. They will be joined by Everly Carganilla (The Afterparty) and newcomer Connor Esterson, who will each play one of their children. The casting marks the latest collaboration between Rodriguez and Netflix, as she previously headlined the animated Carmen Sandiego series.
