Netflix has renewed its superhero family drama The Umbrella Academy for a fourth and final season. Stars Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, and Colm Feore are set to return for the upcoming season. Steve Blackman will return as showrunner and executive producer as he also signed an extended deal over at the streaming giant.
«I'm so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings' journey we began five years ago,» Blackman said in a statement. «But before we get to that conclusion, we've got an amazing story ahead for Season 4, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minute.»
Based on the comic book series of the same name, it was created and written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. The first six-issue limited series, The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite was released back in 2007 and won the 2008 Eisner Award for Best Finite Series/Limited Series. After a decade-long hiatus, the series returned in 2018 with The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion.
The adaptation began development as a film optioned by Universal Pictures in 2011 but was eventually shelved in favor of a television series in 2015, before being officially greenlit by Netflix in July 2017.
Season 1 was released on Netflix on February 15, 2019, with Netflix having reported that 45 million households had watched it during its first month of release, becoming one of the most-streamed series of the year.
The latest season premiered earlier this year in June and followed the events of the comic book's third and fourth arcs, Hotel Oblivion, and Sparrow Academy.
