Netflix seems keen on adding new subscribers to compensate for the loss of the first quarter. After the video streaming platform lost nearly 200,000 subscribers in the first three months of the year, it seems to be taking some major steps to attract more subscribers. The app is reportedly working on live streaming of reality shows and stand-up specials. The app has confirmed its early stages of development to Deadline. According to the report, Netflix will roll out this new option initially for stand-up specials, live comedy shows, and unscripted shows. Netflix will also ask its viewers for live voting for competition series and talent hunt shows. The streaming app is expected to launch the new feature for its upcoming dance competition Dance 100 from The Circle producer Studio Lambert.
Additionally, it could also use the upcoming live-streaming option for its “Netflix Is A Joke” festival. The festival features around 300 stand-up performances across Los Angeles where you’ll get to see performers like Dave Chappelle, Larry David and Pete Davidson. With this live-streaming being rolled out, the stand-up shows could allow Netflix to open new streams, like charging exclusively for those shows. However, there is no such information about Netflix planning to monetise this upcoming feature or not.
The move is also likely to open up the potential to bring unscripted series into line with the linear networks, which are aired live for big competition series such as ABC’s American Idol and Dancing with the Stars, which is moving to Netflix’s closest rival Disney+. Hence, it becomes even more important for Netflix to counter and get a hold of new subscribers.
