An awesome Catbus cosplay from the beloved animated film My Neighbor Totoro has been revealed in a new TikTok video. Though the character first appeared in 1988, it remains widely known among fans of filmmaker and animator Hayao Miyazaki. At 81 years of age, Miyazaki continues to create highly unique animated works, but one of his greatest hits remains My Neighbor Totoro. The film’s charming characters are so popular, in fact, that to date they’ve brought in over a billion dollars in official merchandise.
Oddly enough, not only has the film’s legacy introduced many people to Japanese animation as well as to Miyazaki’s extensive library of work, but it also brought some real-life attention to the Japanese prefecture where it’s set. Originally founded in 1990, Totoro no Furusato Foundation was formed by conservation groups in Saitama prefecture. The area in particular that was under threat was the Sayama Hills, which were facing widespread urban development. Because My Neighbor Totoro is set in the Sayama Hills, efforts to help preserve the forested area were greatly increased and as a result, several museums, a café, walking trails, and a Totoro statue have been built in the salvaged area. The project remains just one of the few ways that Miyazaki’s work has inspired fans.
