It’s said Disney wants a new Star Wars game every six months, which means even more unannounced projects have been greenlit.
There was a noticeable lack of Star Wars related announcements at the D23 video game showcase earlier this month. Aside from a new Galactic Edition and DLC for Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, there weren’t even any updates for the multitude of Star Wars games in development.
Despite the silence, Disney apparently has big ambitions for its Star Wars video games going forward. Namely, it wants to be releasing a new Star Wars game every six months.
This means two new games within a fiscal year – one a smaller project and one major triple-A game.
Two Star Wars games are already confirmed for 2023 and while both lack exact release dates, they do line up with Disney’s supposed aims.
The first is Star Wars Jedi: Survivor for PC and next-gen consoles, which is the long awaited sequel to EA’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
The second is Zynga’s Star Wars: Hunters, a free-to-play arena shooter for Nintendo Switch and mobile devices.
Does this mean the remaining six will all release over the course of the following three years? Probably not, no, as most of them are also major projects. Not to mention they lack a proper trailer and concrete details, such as Skydance New Media’s project and the open world Ubisoft game.
Plus, a couple of them are believed to be undergoing turbulent development cycles. The remake of Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic, for example, has had to switch developers.
The report from Insider Gaming adds that Quantic Dream’s Star Wars: Eclipse may be in trouble too due to issues with the studio’s in-house engine. As such, it may not release until 2026 at the absolute earliest.
