Moon Knight trailers are avoiding MCU baggage. The first wave of MCU Disney+ TV shows have been a tremendous success. Although streaming services like Disney+ don't tend to give viewing figures, third-party analytics suggest they're enduringly popular — with WandaVision remaining in the top 10 streaming originals long after their first release. And yet, for all that is the case, they're not flawless – in part due to their over-reliance on the convoluted wider MCU narrative.
Early MCU Disney+ TV shows have been overly dependent on the shared universe for their success, starring heroes straight from the big screen. They've almost all explored the repercussions of Avengers: Endgame — the grief of Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye, the multidimensional exploits of Loki, and Sam Wilson's decision to accept the mantle of Captain America. This focus on the shared universe has led to increasingly visible narrative problems, notably an overdependence on villain reveals in the final episodes. As a result, they're feeling increasingly formulaic.

Fortunately, Moon Knight looks set to be different. Marvel Studios has released two trailers to date, focusing entirely upon the starring character Marc Spector and his struggle with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Unusually, they do not contain a single nod to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There's no reference to the Avengers, to Thanos and the Blip, to aliens or androids. Moon Knight might as well be set in its own universe, separate from the rest of the MCU, and that's a breath of fresh air for fans of the franchise.
