The showdown between Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Great Gerwig's Barbie was mostly fueled by fans and their memes, but leave it to Tom Cruise to make things super serious. According to a report by Puck, Cruise and the latest entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise is getting bumped from IMAX screens in favor of Oppenheimer.
Cruise has reportedly verbally expressed immense displeasure with Paramount executives about the situation. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning booked most of the IMAX screens for the week of the film's July 12 premiere. However, on July 21 comes Nolan's highly-anticipated biopic Oppenheimer, which locked in all the IMAX screens in North America for three full weeks.
This means that Mission: Impossible will also have to struggle against Barbie, which opens on the same day as Oppenheimer, and then every subsequent blockbuster for the next month.
Looking at this summer's schedule, every week through mid-August, starting with Fast X's release two weeks ago, and aside from the aforementioned Oppenheimer and Barbie, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One will also have to compete with Disney's Haunted Mansion, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Meg 2: The Trench, and Sony's Gran Turismo. All of these come out within one month of Dead Reckoning. It's going to get crowded and Ethan Hunt and company might not be the kings of summer as Cruise probably anticipated.
Given the fact that Dead Reckoning, which has a Part Two scheduled to premiere next June, suffered a string of delays Cruise's anger or disappointment might be somewhat warranted, that's still something we're all dealing with as movie fans in general.
