Microsoft teased a more 3D-looking emoji before the rollout of Windows 11, but when Windows 11 started arriving, we instead got a more traditional flat emoji. Now we’re finding out that Microsoft is still trying to bring a set of 3D emoji to Windows, it’ll just take a little while longer. And yes, it'll include the all-powerful poop emoji.
Nando Costa, distinguished designer at Microsoft, revealed in a LinkedIn blog post the massive journey Microsoft has been on to create its new 3D emoji. The emoji revamp started back in the Fall of 2020 after Microsoft’s quarterly hackathon. Microsoft's employees banded together to make a new set of emoji with the initial sketches taking on an almost claymation-style look to them.

Each emoji started life as a 2D image created in Adobe Illustrator before being converted into a 3D model in Cinema 4D. From there, the models are rendered as PNG images. Some of them are animated into gifs, which Costa said might appear in future versions of MS Teams, Loop, Flipgrid, or other Microsoft applications.
However, these 3D emoji still aren’t in Windows. When asked on Twitter when Windows 11 emoji will look like the ones Costa previewed in his blog post, Costa replied: “We’re working on that.”
In other Microsoft news, Halo is becoming a TV series courtesy of Paramount and we just got to see its first trailer. Guess what? Master Chief is in it, and so is Cortana, although Cortana isn't quite as blue as some people might have liked. You’ll be able to stream the Halo TV series on Paramount Plus starting March 24.
