Men cast and character guide. Men marks Alex Garland’s third feature film as a writer-director and it’s arguably more ominous and surreal than either Ex Machina and Annihilation. Men is horror at its most creepy and to properly carry out his onscreen vision, Garland assembles a strong cast to deliver solid, eerie performances.
Garland made his writing debut with 28 Days Later, a post-apocalyptic horror film directed by Danny Boyle. In the years since, the screenwriter branched out, going on to direct his first film in 2014 and finding success with audiences and critics alike. With Annihilation, the writer-director ditched a more straightforward story for a more ambiguous one. The film was also well-received by critics, though Men is currently set up to potentially become his most divisive (and perhaps most deeply unsettling) film to date.

Harper Marlowe is a widow who goes on a vacation following her husband’s death and is haunted in more ways than one during her stay in the small country town. Be it alone or walking through town, Harper is never left alone. Harper is portrayed by Jessie Buckley, who most recently played the younger version of Olivia Colman’s character in The Lost Daughter, a role she was Oscar-nominated for. Buckley is also known for her roles in I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Fargo, Chernobyl, Misbehaviour, War & Peace, Wild Rose, and Beast.
