After feeling betrayed by Maya, Kingpin decides to take her family and her entire town hostage to make her feel the same anger. But Maya gets a warning from Biskinik and realizes that her people need her. So in a moment of need, she returns and her mother helps her realize her true powers.
She comes from an ancestral line of special women who protected their people across generations. Being the descendants of the first Choctaw leader, Chafa, they were born with unique abilities. These powers also connected their spirits with their future generations and came to their aid over time.
This is something that also happened with Maya, as the powers of her ancestors echoed through her at a time when she most needed them. She got the ferocity and super strength of Chafa, a great sense of strategy from Lowak, cunningness and sharpshooting abilities from Tuklo, and the ability to heal and echo her powers onto others from her mother, Taloa.
Using these abilities, she empowers her cousin Bonnie and grandmother Chula. Together they take down Wilson Fisk’s men while Henry and Biscuits protect the rest of the Tamaha people. The series ends with Fisk retreating and Maya finally embracing her family by enjoying a meal with them.
Since Maya’s powers were meant to spread love, she used them to help Fisk. Bringing him behind the same wall where he murdered his abusive father, she made him let go of his pain and anger. This spiritual trip to the worst moment of his life completely shook Fisk and made him retreat.
