Live A Live is a JRPG that is broken into different chapters, with each one focusing on a character in a different setting and point in history, though which characters to start with may confuse some new players. These chapters vary in tone, gameplay style, and length, making Live A Live a strange RPG anthology that feels like short stories in video game form. There are eight playable characters in the game (not counting extra party members), though the final character isn't unlocked until the other seven chapters have been completed.
The seven characters available at the start of Live A Live are Pogo, Shifu, Oboromaru, Sundown Kid, Akira, Masaru, and Cube. Pogo is a caveman who must save a girl from being sacrificed, Shifu is a martial arts master in search of a disciple, Oboromaru is a ninja on a mission to infiltrate a fortress, Sundown Kid is an outlaw who must protect a town from bandits, Akira is a psychic boy who comes into conflict with a biker gang, Masaru is a martial artist who wishes to become the best in the world, and Cube is a robot aboard a dangerous spaceship. Once the player finishes these seven stories, they unlock Oersted, the final character, who is a knight from the Middle Ages on a quest to slay the Lord of Darkness.
