Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth has seen great success since launching this past January, selling over one million units in its first week. This is despite other big-name games like Tekken 8 and Persona 3 Reload arriving around the same time. However, according to studio director and series producer Masayoshi Yokoyama, it’s a speed that the developer has “never experienced before.”
Speaking to 4Gamer (translation via Automaton-Media), “We gave a press release about how (Infinite Wealth) sold over one million copies worldwide in one week following its release, but it’s really a speed we have never experienced before. Like a Dragon games sell in the long run rather than right off the bat. This has been the case ever since the series’ early days.
“It has an adult player base, after all, so there’s no rush, you know? People hear about the games from their friends, they happen to come across them, and that’s how the titles grow. That’s why the way (Infinite Wealth) started was quite surprising to me.”
It also seems that sales in Japan and Asia are strong. “The game is incredibly strong in Japan. Sales in (the rest of) Asia are also quite strong, but the momentum in Japan is even greater than in the past.” In its debut week, the RPG sold over 180,000 physical units in Japan, surpassing Yakuza: Like a Dragon (+156,000 sales) and Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (+123,000 units sold).
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and PC for $70. It’s a direct follow-up to Yakuza: Like a Dragon, featuring Ichiban Kasuga as he ventures to Honolulu City on a personal mission. He runs into Kazuma Kiryu, who has his own business (and dedicated side content) to sort through.
