Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg provides an update on Lights Out 2, the sequel to his 2016 horror hit Lights Out that's been long in development. Based on Sandberg's 2013 horror short film of the same name and written by Eric Heisserer (Arrival), the story of Lights Out revolves around a young woman named Rebecca who is forced to confront her childhood fears and protect her half-brother Martin from a vengeful supernatural entity that has a mysterious connection with their mother.
The film features a cast led by Teresa Palmer and Gabriel Bateman, who play the roles of Rebecca and Martin, respectively. They are joined by Alexander DiPersia, Alicia Vela-Bailey, Billy Burke, and Maria Bello, who plays the half-siblings' mother, Sophie. Lights Out marked Sandberg's feature directorial debut and set the platform for him to helm bigger projects like Annabelle: Creation and the Shazam! films. The film was made on a modest budget of $4 million and turned out to be a major box office success, grossing nearly $150 million worldwide. While a sequel to Lights Out was greenlit immediately after the film's release in 2016, the project has been in limbo ever since.
