Kingston launched an extremely compact external SSD today that offers up to 2TB of storage in a drive weighing just 28.7 grams.
The Kingston XS1000 External SSD looks like an oversized USB stick, measuring 69.54 by 32.58 by 13.5mm. As Keith Schimmenti, SSD business manager at Kingston explains:
"We designed this drive to be sleek and compact, measuring merely half the size of a standard SSD. This ensures unparalleled portability, making it the ultimate selection for those seeking a combination of convenience and top-notch performance available in the market."
Inside the metal and plastic casing is 1TB or 2TB of 3D NAND flash memory capable of achieving read speeds of up to 1,050MB/s, and write speeds of 1,000MB/s through a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection. Kingston includes a USB-C to USB-A cable in the box for backwards compatibility, and lists drive support for Windows 10, Windows 11, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, Android, and iOS/iPadOS.
The 1TB model of the XS1000 costs $64.99, while the 2TB model is $109.99. Both drives include a five-year limited warranty and Kingston is marketing them as "a reliable companion for easy file backups." However, if you want an even faster drive that's still easy to throw in a bag or pocket, Kingston has you covered with its XS2000 drives.
