Kim Kardashian, socialite, and reality star from The Kardashians was gifted a lock of Marilyn Monroe's hair by Ripley's Believe It Or Not! after being granted permission to wear the icon's dress, but the hair may not actually be Monroe's. Kim's appearance at the 2022 Met Gala was met with backlash and controversy because she was wearing Monroe's famous «Happy Birthday, Mr. President» dress. Apart from many believing that it was disrespectful for Kim to even wear the dress, Kim was criticized and essentially reprimanded by Riverdale actress, Lili Reinhart, for stating that she quickly lost 16 pounds to be able to wear the dress. Reinhart felt that Kim should do a better job at how she promotes an urgency for weight loss given her following and status; many echoed Reinhart's sentiments.
Criticism towards the star continued once it was public knowledge that she was gifted a lock of the icon's hair. Many continued to state that the gift was a blatant disrespect to Monroe's legacy, but it was also said that sharing this personal item from Monroe was disallowing her from resting in peace and The Kardashians star Kim was wrong for accepting the gift. Even further, it did not come across well when Kim said she would do some serious voodoo on Monroe's lock of hair. Despite the controversy surrounding her Met Gala fashion choices, Kim shared that she wore another Monroe dress to a Met Gala after-party.
