The working title for Joker 2, Folie á Deux, secretly sets up the best opportunity for the «Willem Dafoe as Joker» fan-casting to become true. While neither director Todd Phillips nor Joaquin Phoenix ever disregarded doing Joker 2, a sequel to what felt like a very self-contained story was never taken for granted – despite the first film's commercial and awards success. However, after years of speculation, Joker 2 has been confirmed, and both Phillips and Phoenix are returning to what could be a completely different film from the first one.
With the return of Phoenix to the role of Arthur Fleck, a.k.a. the Joker, DC will have at least two actors playing a character known as The Joker in ongoing movie franchises, the other being Barry Keoghan in The Batman. On top of that, there is also the DCEU Joker, played by Jared Leto, whose future in the franchise remains uncertain after his appearance in Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League. Between all those actors, audiences are getting to see different, unique takes on the Joker, and yet there could be another addition to that list.

When asked about the decade-old audiences' wish to see him playing the Joker, Willem Dafoe, who has been fan-cast as the Batman villain for years, mentioned that he would be interested in tackling the character, but with a different spin. Rather than playing the Clown Prince of Crime, Dafoe would like to play a Joker imposter opposing Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, either imitating or ripping off what Arthur Fleck had done.
