James Gunn doesn't think the Guardians of the Galaxy are actually superheroes. The filmmaker first brought the ragtag team of rebels from the pages of comic book obscurity to a big screen blockbuster in 2014'sGuardians of the Galaxy. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $772 million at the box office, and Gunn followed it up with a sequel in 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which topped the first film's haul with $863 million.
Soon after beginning work on the threequel, Gunn was fired by Disney due to some controversial tweets that resurfaced. DC quickly swooped in to hire the in-demand director and gave him carte blanche to work with any property he wanted. Gunn chose another popular team of misfits, the Suicide Squad, and the movie (also titled The Suicide Squad) was released last year to less fanfare at the box office than expected, though the film was still well-received and led to a successful spinoff series on HBO Max for John Cena's Peacemaker. In the meantime, Gunn was rehired to helmGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, due for release on May 5, 2023.

A fan recently reached out to Gunn on Twitter asking him if he ever gets tired of making superheroes movies about characters who don't actually have superpowers and therefore, have no business calling themselves superheroes. Gunn responded with a surprising answer, saying that he doesn't actually "consider the Guardians superheroes," and therefore doesn't really get sick of the genre. Read his response below:
I don’t consider the Guardians superheroes & that’s almost every movie ever until just a few years ago.
