But in Iron Man #21, Iron Man hides a weakness that could be easily exploited by a supervillain — and a lucky shot almost destroys him completely.
In previous story arcs, Iron Man's armor was not portrayed as a strength but a weakness. A broken neck forced him to wear his helmet to prevent his death on an alien planet, and a morphine administrator quickly gave way to a painkiller addiction that nearly killed him. Now spending weeks at a time at a rehab center, Tony Stark is on the road to recovery — but the job of a superhero is never done, and a crisis aboard a commercial plane forces Iron Man into action once again.

In Iron Man #21, written by Christopher Cantwell with art by Angel Unzueta, Iron Man engages an unknown assailant in combat after the latter steals a briefcase from an airplane, endangering all the passengers onboard. The thief fires an adamantium projectile at Iron Man, which pierces his armor easily and rips through his leg. Iron Man is grounded and checks his armor systems (after tending to his own wound). «Starboard fuel line: perforated,» the BOSS system reports from inside Stark's armor. «Ignition of jet boots at this time risks: detonation of hydrogen stores.»
