With Iron Man out of commission, Captain America just offered War Machine the chance to replace him on the Avengers. In Iron Man #22 by Marvel Comics, Steve Rogers visits Tony Stark in the hospital after he's nearly killed in battle. When Captain America chats with Rhodey, he offers him a spot on the team but gets turned down as War Machine has other plans in mind.
Iron Man and War Machine are teaming up together in the current Iron Man arc from Marvel Comics, as the pair are trying to take down the dangerous black market arms dealer, Source Control. After the death of their mutual friend, Vic Martinelli, the two armor-wearing heroes investigate what killed him and his connection to the re-emerged Ten Rings. However, the mission doesn't go as planned. After Tony Stark is seriously injured in a battle against Titanium Man, Captain America turns to Rhodey to potentially replace Iron Man on the Avengers.

In Iron Man #22 by Christopher Cantwell, Angel Unzueta, Frank D'Armata, and VC's Joe Caramagna from Marvel Comics, Iron Man and War Machine's investigation of Titanium Man and his connection to Source Control lead them directly into the path of the armored villain. However, after nearly defeating him, Titanium Man unleashes Compound 13 into the face of Tony Stark, the same material that killed Captain Marvel. While Iron Man's helmet filters most of the deadly substance, it still manages to paralyze the hero and hospitalize him.
