iPhone 14 may ditch the SIM card too but you need NOT worry
The iPhone keeps making bold moves every few years and the entire industry follows. After ditching the headphone jack and the charger, the iPhone is once again ready to ditch another crucial component of the smartphone – the SIM card tray. Yes, with the iPhone 14 generation, Apple is planning to get rid of the physical SIM card tray and stick to an eSIM option. Are you annoyed already? Worry not, as Apple seems to have a better solution to tackle this omission this year – by giving an option.
Based on a report from The Wall Street Journal, it is said that Apple is going for an eSIM only option for the iPhone 14 in selected markets. It wants to see whether consumers are open to the idea of an eSIM only iPhone from this year. If customers don't prefer that, Apple will be selling the iPhone 14 with physical SIM card slots as well. This eSIM-only version of the iPhone 14 will be available in only a few markets though.
The report goes on to say that Apple has already been in talks with certain US carriers to prepare for an eSIM-only model. The eSIM model allows for Apple to better utilize the space inside to accommodate for larger components, such as a bigger battery. Additionally, the eSIM will also allow carriers to roll out updates faster and simultaneously.
iPhones have had the provision for having an eSIM since years. It first appeared with the iPhone XS and iPhone XR generation, and Apple has ever since allowed for a secondary or primary eSIM connection on your iPhone. Along with the physical SIM card slot, this technically makes the iPhone a dual SIM smartphone. What remains to be seen is whether Apple will make space for two eSIM connections.
