Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger decided to start the year by declaring that his company’s PC processors will never be beaten by AMD.
In some rather bold remarks, Gelsinger gloated about Intel’s achievements over AMD during a 5-minute year-in-review video he posted on LinkedIn. According to Gelsinger, his company now has a firm lead over AMD in the race for the best PC processors, thanks to Intel’s 12th generation Core "Alder Lake" chips, which launched in November to strong reviews.
"All of a sudden, boom, we are back in the game. AMD in the rear view mirror in clients, and never again will they be in the windshield," Gelsinger says with a smile. “We are just leading the market." If you’re an Intel fan, you’ll love to hear the confidence. But if you’re team AMD, you’re likely rolling your eyes.
Time will tell if Gelsinger will one day regret his remarks. For now, it’s true Intel’s Alder Lake chips often outperform AMD's Ryzen 5000 processors on various benchmarks, although the results are close. So in reality, the race between the two chip giants is more neck and neck.
It also won’t be long before AMD responds with new Ryzen 7000 CPUs, which are slated to arrive during this year’s second half with cutting-edge technologies. This includes using a 5-nanometer manufacturing process and the ability to reach over 5GHz in clock speeds.
In the meantime, Intel is rumored to be working on its successor to the 12th generation Core processors with new Raptor Lake chips, which will likely refine the hybrid CPU core architecture found in Alder Lake. In his video, Gelsinger added that his company remains on track or ahead of schedule in upgrading Intel’s own chip manufacturing technologies over the next five years.
