The first trailer for Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power prequel series aired during Sunday's Super Bowl.
Set in the Second Age of Middle-earth—thousands of years before the One Ring was even forged—the multi-season story tells of the forging of the Rings of Power, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the island kingdom of Númenor, and the last alliance between Elves and Men.
"Haven't you ever wondered what else is out there?" a voice whispers at the start of the one-minute teaser. "There's wonders in this world beyond our wandering." Little is revealed about the storyline, but audiences get their first glimpses of characters Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), Halbrand (Charlie Vickers), Arondir (Ismael Cruz Cordova), Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur), Elrond (Robert Aramayo), and Princess Disa (Sophia Nomvete).
Sandwiched between stunning aerials of a waterfront city, Middle-earth fields, flowing waterfalls, and an edge-of-the-forest elven gathering are brief looks at a stoic Benjamin Walker as an unnamed robed elf and some sort of giant troll. The ensemble cast includes Nazanin Boniadi (Bronwyn), Charles Edwards (Celebrimbor), and Maxim Baldy (Isildur).
The show, according to Amazon Studios, takes viewers "back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien's pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness." Episode one, titled "Shadow of the Past," will hit Amazon Prime Video on Sept. 2, with new installments released weekly.
The long-awaited series—initially announced in 2017 as part of a $250 million rights deal with the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien,
