Stray, the smash hit indie adventure game (and former PlayStation console exclusive), is getting the adaptation treatment. Annapurna Animation is currently working on turning the title into an animated feature film, retelling the story of a cat in a world inhabited by robots for a new audience.
To recap, Stray released on PS5 and PS4 back in 2022, launching day and date on PS Plus Extra. It sees you playing as a nameless domestic cat who stumbles into a mysterious, walled-off city, devoid of human life and infested with an aggressive mutant bacteria. It was a huge success, proving immensely popular, so it's no huge surprise to see it's being made into a film.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Annapurna Animation's Robert Baird describes Stray as «all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it», calling it a «buddy comedy about a cat and a robot». He talks about the game's «hopepunk» vibe — a term coined by the game's developer, BlueTwelve — which the team is aiming to capture.
Annapurna Animation's debut movie, Nimona, was very well-received, so it appears that Stray is in good hands here. There's no word on when we can expect to watch the flick, but with production well underway, hopefully it isn't too far out.
