James Wan shares a BTS look at the creatures from Aquaman. After the stylistic and gritty features in the franchise, Wan's first Aquaman movie ushered in a new era for the DCEU with its ludicrous fun, intense action, and vibrant imagery. The film saw Jason Momoa tackle the leading Atlantean King Arthur Curry role, with Amber Heard appearing as Mera and Patrick Wilson playing the menacing villain, Ocean Master/Orm Marius. Aquaman's tone and performances resonated with audiences, leading the feature to become DCEU's first to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office. Given the unprecedented success, WB and DC were quick to greenlight a sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which will be released in March 2023.
Aquaman proved popular with audiences because of its exemplary worldbuilding that saw Momoa's hero explore and encounter the comics-accurate locales and creatures. The Seven Kingdoms, including Atlantis, Xebel, Kingdom of the Fishermen, Kingdom of the Trench, Kingdom of the Deserters, and The Hidden Sea, all made their way into the movie, although some were studied in greater depth than the others. Wan was also able to scratch his creature itch by designing some fascinating undersea characters for Aquaman, bringing sentient monsters like Karathen and Topo the Octopus to life. The world of Aquaman was immaculately detailed as Wan worked closely with artists and VFX personnel to replicate the designs from the comics, and now he is sharing some details about the process.
