The Demon’s Souls remake has introduced the title to many new fans of the series and has allowed day one fans to relive their journey through Boletaria. Demon’s Souls is the spiritual predecessor of the Dark Souls games and kick-started the entire Soulsborne series. It fittingly created many weapons, items, and enemies that have been slightly altered and featured in sequels.
However, not every idea in Demon’s Souls was able to make the transition from one game to the other. The World Tendency feature was one of these scrapped ideas, but even though it never fully returned, it was a unique idea that had a fitting place in the game.

Like many of the features in FromSoftWare games, the mechanics behind World Tendency and its effect on the player is never explicitly stated or explained. Though there is an entire menu dedicated to the feature, it never goes into detail about how to sway each world one way or the other.
A simple way to explain World Tendency is to call it a morality or karma system. Certain actions performed in-game change the World Tendency, and it ranges from neutral to black or white, with black being more chaotic and dangerous while white is easier and more peaceful. And since Demon’s Souls allows players to travel between five different worlds via the game’s Archstones, each area has its own independent World Tendency.
A Black World Tendency is created by committing heinous acts such as killing NPCs and, curiously, the tendency will shift towards black if the player dies while in human form outside the hub world, the Nexus.
